GOP Election Day Workers
Undaunted by inclement weather, dozens of experienced GOP volunteers reported for duty early on Election Day, Tuesday, November 2.
The workers cheerfully offered voters information about both Republican and the endorsed non-partisan candidates on Michigan's lengthy ballot.
Organizing the effort locally was Thomas R. McCleary, Jr., chairman of the 13th Republican executive committee. The workers reported that gray skies, cool temperatures, and wet weather were no deterrent to a heavy voter turnout.
In addition, a cadre of trained workers was on duty under the coordination of John Keogh, Grosse Pointe Farms, to provide assistance at various sites around Wayne County ensuring an error-free voting process.
Wayne County Welcomes 'W'
A sea of supporters greeted President George W. Bush on August 30, 2004, for his eighth appearance in Michigan since January 2004.
Also taking a part in his introduction to the crowd was Bo Schembechler, University of Michigan's retired head football coach who served there for 21 years.
The Associated Press reported 12,500 people on hand to hear the President, while the true number may have been even greater. The crowd was twice as large as the one gathered to hear John Kerry speak at the exact same venue one month earlier.
Amid very tight, but efficient security, the President make his remarks at the outdoor event in Taylor's Heritage Park.
The President said, "None of us will ever forget that day when one era ended and another began. On September the 14th, 2001, I stood in the ruins of the Twin Towers. It's a day I'll never forget. There were workers in hard hats yelling at me, 'Whatever it takes.' A fellow grabbed me by the arm as I was trying to thank people, and he looked me right in the eye and he said, 'Do not let me down.'"
"I have a duty that goes on for this country. I wake up every morning trying to -- how best to secure this country. I will never relent in defending America, whatever it takes!" >> Full text.
