Facing Down Terrorism
U. S. Attorney Proud of His Role on Federal Law Enforcement Team
Speaking at the March 19, 2002, ERC meeting, Jeffrey G. Collins, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan said his duty was “to defend freedom, and to protect Americans.”
As a member of the executive branch of the Federal government, Collins stated that goals of his office were redefined by recent events. He said, “My boss is Attorney General John Ashcroft.” Collins added that our purpose is now very clear, “to win the war on terrorism.”
He said he was “proud to be on this law enforcement team to protect lives, prevent future terrorism, and protect vulnerable communities from any backlash.”
Collins observed, “We are striking the right balance between enforcement, security and individual rights.” He went on to say, “We are choking off funding of terrorist activities.”
Speaking of the recent project involving interviews with 500 Middle Eastern men in Southeast Michigan, Collins stressed that it did not constitute racial profiling. He explained that interviews were voluntary, and none of those interviewed were suspected of wrongdoing. Collins reported that one way in which the project has been highly successful has been in building trust, and developing contacts that may be future sources of information.
Referring to the cry “Let's roll,” Collins said that he was proud of the character and courage displayed by so many Americans during recent months.
Collins said that another priority of his office is “building safe neighborhoods” by cracking down on firearms violence through a coordinated effort with the Wayne County Prosecutor, and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms.
Collins was appointed to the post by President Bush, and unanimously confirmed by the Senate on November 6, 2001. He supervises a staff of 90 attorneys.
