Business Career
After graduating from Hope College in 1975, he earned an MBA from the University of Michigan before launching a successful career at Herman Miller, Inc. The Zeeland, Michigan, company has been cited frequently as one of the most admired in America and rated one of the best places to work.
Over his 15-year Herman Miller career, Hoekstra shouldered responsibilities in product development, product management, and dealer development, eventually becoming marketing vice president. While with that firm, Hoekstra had the opportunity to partner with outside designers in the development and introduction of several groundbreaking, world-renowned product lines.
His career at Herman Miller allowed him to develop skills at the cutting edge of innovative management practices -- learning the concepts of participative management and team building. These skills worked not only at Herman Miller but also contributed to his later work in the public service sector.
Public Service
In 1992, Hoekstra defeated the 26-year incumbent in the GOP congressional primary. Although outspent at least 15-to-1, he attributes the victory to a strong grassroots effort. He has been elected to nine consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.
In the Congress, Hoekstra has served on numerous House committees, including Education & Labor, Budget, and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. He also was privileged to participate in development of the 1994 “Contract with America” which laid the foundation for Republican recapture of the U.S. House for the first time in 40 years.
Working on a bipartisan basis with a Democratic President, Hoekstra and the Republican congressional leadership helped balance the budget for four years in the late 1990s, led the way to overthrowing results of a corrupt Teamster's Union election, and acted to reform the U.S. intelligence community in response to the 2001 terrorist attacks and the 9/11 Commission Report.
The congressman has also continued to work for reform in education and government, advocating increased flexibility for both parents and states.
Hoekstra grew up in western Michigan after his parents emigrated from the Netherlands to become proud United States citizens when he was three-years-old.
Hoekstra and his wife, Diane, have been married for more than 30 years, reside in Holland, and have three children, Erin, Allison (Mrs. Mike Murray), and Bryan. Spending time with family is Hoekstra's greatest enjoyment, followed by running, biking and golfing.
