Finally... and the Vote is Unanimous
U.S. Senate Confirms Judge Neilson
After Four Years as Hostage of Democrats
Finally. Patience was rewarded October 27, 2005, when the U.S. Senate confirmed Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Susan Bieke Neilson's nomination to a Federal Court post.
Neilson, wife of ERC-PAC member, Jeff Neilson, was one of four Michigan judges whose nomination was part of the lengthy Democrat filibuster threat in the U.S. Senate.
For four years, both Michigan Democrat Senators Levin and Stabenow had opposed the nomination in retaliation for what they saw as a delay of two Clinton-era judicial appointments by Republicans.
The 6th U.S. Court of Appeals reviews appeals from federal district courts in Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee, and from the U.S. Tax Court, and certain federal administrative agencies where the non-governmental parties are from states that make up the 6th Circuit. The court is located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Neilson will maintain her court chambers in Detroit, although she will travel to Cincinnati about eight weeks a year for oral arguments when the court is in session.
Thanking Senators for their support, Neilson said, "I look forward to performing my new duties in a fashion that will justify the confidence President Bush has placed in me and to bring credit to the judiciary."
Commenting on the nomination, Maura Corrigan, Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, said, "Judge Susan Bieke Neilson has earned the reputation of being one of the most dedicated and knowledgeable trial court jurists in the State of Michigan. I believe her experience as a trial court judge coupled with her legal writing abilities will make her an outstanding addition to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit."
Neilson was appointed to Michigan's 3rd Judicial Circuit Court in 1991 by Gov. John Engler, and was reelected in 1992, 1996 and 2002. The 3rd Judicial Circuit serves Wayne County, and is the largest trial court in the state.
Prior to her judicial service, Neilson was a partner at Dickinson Wright PLLC, one of Michigan's oldest and most prestigious law firms and specialized in product liability (automotive, pharmaceutical and industrial components), general negligence, medical malpractice and commercial litigation.
She received her J.D. degree (cum laude) from Wayne State University School of Law in 1980 and was a member of its law review. In 1977 she graduated with high distinction from the University of Michigan Honors College and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
Judge Neilson has written numerous articles and was co-editor and author of Michigan Civil Procedure, a two-volume treatise on all areas of Michigan civil practice. This treatise was selected by the Michigan Judicial Institute for purchase on behalf of every trial court judge in Michigan and received the “Plain English Award” from the State Bar of Michigan.
Neilson is also active in numerous community service organizations, including the Catholic Lawyers Society and Soroptimist International. She also chairs the worship commission at her local Catholic church.
She is a lifelong Michigan resident, has been married for 27 years, and has two children.
